Sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention and third session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers
11 - 15 September 2017
The sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) on 11-13 September 2017, the third session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Protocol on PRTRs) on 15 September 2017, their joint High-level Segment on 14 September 2017 and their associated meetings on 10-15 September 2017, will be held in Budva (Becici), Montenegro.
The events will provide a platform for Parties, Signatories, international organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to discuss achievements and challenges in promoting a wide range of topics, including access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters. The events will feature a joint high-level segment where delegations will focus on the role of the Aarhus Convention and its Protocol on PRTRs in implementing Sustainable Development Goals.
The Aarhus Convention and its Protocol on PRTRs are a unique multilateral environmental agreements The Convention contains three broad themes or 'pillars': access to information, public participation and access to justice. The Convention:
• Links environmental rights and human rights
• Acknowledges that we owe an obligation to future generations
• Establishes that sustainable development can be achieved only through the involvement of all stakeholders
• Links government accountability and environmental protection
• Focuses on interactions between the public and public authorities in a democratic context.
Montenegro acceded to the Aarhus Convention on 2 November 2009.
Montenegro as an ecological State, proclaimed by the Parliament of Montenegro in September 1991, and a country of exceptional natural beauty is particularly devoted to the implementation of the Aarhus Convention and shapes its development on the principles of sustainability and environmental protection.
The organization of such events will even further increase the commitment of Montenegro to the principles of sustainable development, advance the implementation of Aarhus Convention and increase visibility of our country at the international level.
